We booked our Rear Admiral, Steve Knightley, for a return visit in March. The word got out in September and the reservations list filled before we got a chance to announce this officially.
So we took the plunge and asked Steve if he'd like to come to us twice? And - how lucky is this? - he had a free evening and said yes. Hence the appalling pun at the top of this page.
Steve's visits to the Widecombe Sailing Club were Tuesday 13th March and Wednesday 21st March 2018.
Comments from people who came to Tuesday's gig are below:
Thanks Daf for arranging a super night at Cafe on the Green. Lovely atmosphere as always and music set superb. Nice to get a bit of an understanding of the man who is a true professional. Jean
Great evening! Thanks!!
Put me down for 2 tickets for Sean Lakeman & Kathryn Roberts
Xxx Judy
Thanks again for organising another lovely 'Daf' evening in the Cafe. It was the perfect intimate setting for Steve's 'Stories & Songs' tour and I hope you enjoy next week's too. I think Liz and Edward do a great job in running the Cafe – Front Row Frances
A really great evening and good grub as usual – Andrew
What a brilliant evening with Steve on Tuesday!! The food was excellent, and the whole idea is such fun! It was very well organised, and we look forward to future events.
Steve said he felt he should possibly change some details for those attending again next week, well, I would quite happily see the whole thing again – no need to change a thing!!
Excellent all round, well done! - Jane
Just a line to say thank you for last Tuesday....it was a great evening - thanks for arranging it!
All the best....Lindy
Wonderful eve with Steve, & such a lovely venue. Looking forward to the next one in June. Roger
Had a great evening on Tuesday - many thanks and well done everyone Harriet on FB
We too had a wonderful evening! Our first visit to the cafe and due to make our second visit next week! – Daph on FB
Photos below from Tuesday 13th. They were taken, as usual, by the wonderful Andrew Lester. If you can think of a caption let me know.

Wednesday 21st saw another troop (crew?) of Widecombe Sailors at the Cafe, looking for a good nosh and entertainment. Despite the fact that Steve said the second performance would be the same as the first, it wasn't quite, which was jolly good for those of us that saw both. Here are some comments:
Just wanted to say thanks for a fantastic night last week... I'd had a really long day at work and it was just what I needed. It was fascinating to hear Steve's journey through music and how he nearly gave it all up. I'm also proud to have probably been the youngest person there Would I be able to reserve 3 tickets for dinner and music for Kathryn Roberts and Sean Lakeman please? – Laura
Great night last night with the Rear Admiral! My mother and sister are great SoH fans and particularly enjoyed it. – Mark
It was an excellent evening, thoroughly enjoyable in a fantastic venue which I will now visit for lunch if I can. I look forward to the next night with Steve and hopefully I will be able to get there in time to have supper.
Thanks again,
Simon
I Just wanted to tell you how much Dad and I enjoyed the Knightley night. He never disappoints, does he? Loved the church bells adding to the atmosphere too.
And what a great job you do organising. And food was excellent and two nice ladies for company on our table. What more could anyone want from an evening out!?
Thank you - Martine
It was awesome - we loved every minute of it, Steve was great and what a great venue and packed full
Thanks
Tara
Well what a wonderful night that was eh!
A big thanks to you and the team for putting it together and to the cafe staff, who as ever pulled out the stops for a lovely pre-gig feast.
Can’t wait for the next one,
John
Just to let you know I really enjoyed Steve.
To be honest I didn’t know what the evening entailed, (i’m just the chauffeur) and thought it would be ‘same old, same old’ and I thought it was great as I just love listening to him speak and tell the tales and so much I hadn’t heard before.
Regards
Jill
And now for the photos. Some of these are Andrew's but I also have some taken by Jon Fryer and Daph Stanford.

When Steve came two years ago, we awarded him with the one and only Golden Rowlock for services to the Widecombe Sailing Club. This year he did two gigs and got a lesser gift. Well... can't devalue a Rowlock, can we? It's a unique teeshirt in a size suggested by Phil Beer. I bestowed the gift upon Steve at the first gig but had to take it back to do the same at the second one. Some people have suggested I should have got him two teeshirts, and maybe I should have, but I couldn't be sure that he'd actually like it.
Below is a photo of the teeshirt up close and modelled by an old friend of mine called Edward (but also known as Annie by my niece. Don't ask.)

If anyone would like any teeshirts, polo shirts, rugby shirts or fleeces with the official Widecombe Sailing Club logo it can be done. Please contact me for details, prices are pretty reasonable.
But unless your name is Steve Knightley you can't have one that says 'Rear Admiral' on it.
Below is the first half of Steve's second (first) gig. That is, the one that was announced first but happened second. Huge thanks to Jeni for putting it on You Tube. Once you've seen this - the first half - you can find the second half on You Tube too.
