Kathryn Roberts & Sean Lakeman

Kathryn Roberts and Sean Lakeman have long established themselves as one of the UK folk scene's most rewardingly enduring partnerships.

Twice winners of the BBC Radio 2 Folk Award for Best Duo - in 2016 & 2013 - the couple's intimacy and strength of passion on stage have won them many fans and an enviable reputation as 'songwriters par excellence' (FROOTS), whose greatly varied original songs cover such subjects as wicked mermaids, Norwegian legends and a lonely whale.

WINNERS – ‘BEST DUO’ – BBC RADIO 2 FOLK AWARDS 2016
WINNERS     – ‘BEST DUO’ – SPIRAL EARTH AWARDS 2015
WINNERS     – ‘BEST DUO’ – BBC RADIO 2 FOLK AWARDS 2013

We were lucky to have persuaded Kathryn and Sean to come to the Cafe on the Green for our midsummer gig. This was on Wednesday 27 June. The Cafe on the Green had changed hands just a couple of weeks before and the new owners did a fantastic job getting everyone fed and watered in time and keeping up with the requests for ice cream!  It was a hot evening with all the doors and windows open, which meant the Widecombe bellringers provided inpromptu backing to Sean and Kathryn's songs in the first half... but it didn't ruin the evening!

We have had some comments coming through from Widecombe Sailors who were present:

Thanks for Wednesday Daf, it was fantastic!
Please could you pass me details for the next event and can I check I'm on your mailing list?
Great work organising such a lovely evening - thanks very much
Will

Katherine and Sean's gig last week was and wonderful evening. Katherine has a sublime voice and a brilliant way with words, their musicianship is brilliant. The food was tasty and the company at our table convivial
Another memorable Widecombe evening. Hibly

It was an excellent evening on Wednesday.... Thank you for organising it!........all the best.....Lindy

Really enjoyed Kathryn & Sean last week. They are both brilliant and Kathryn's voice, heard live, is something very special indeed. I still have shivers up my spine following the beautiful and utterly bewitching "Rusalka". It's the third time I've seen them live, and they get better each time. And I think the new folks at the Cafe did a stirling job......a baptism of fire for them but they were great; hope they're happy to keep the Sailing club in its rightful home. Andrea

Thank you for organising last night – it really was super.
Also great to see the new owners have fully “stepped up to the mark” re quality and organisation – please thank them. Jillian

A really excellent evening.

This was yet another first class event…the singing and playing to such a high standard.
An absolute delight.
And good food, and company to go with it !
Keep them going…looking forward to the next one.
Cheers
Ros

After we left and headed up the hill towards Bovey, we were greeted by the magnificent sight of an almost full moon ahead of us and looking back towards Widecombe the silhouetted outline of the hills against a line of the vibrant colours of a setting sun.  We just had to get out of the car and marvel at the vision and in the semi darkness saw a lady, who came over to us and said what a perfect evening - the music in the café followed by this amazing sight.  It turned out she had never been to one of your 'DO's' and had never seen Sean & Kathryn before. After a while we left her communing and headed home and even at that time of night the car was reading 20C on the A38. - Frances

ps: Hope you like the multicolour writing. Got the idea from Sean and Kathryn's website.
